Job Summary:
The Communications Specialist - Lead will work closely with CalOptima staff to provide communications support to ensure effective internal and external communication about CalOptima programs and activities.
Position Responsibilities:
- Leads diverse communications projects with minimal supervision in support of CalOptima's mission, vision, and strategic plan.
- Develops written materials for internal and external audiences, including for members, providers, community-based organizations, and employees.
- Produces communications tools including but not limited to talking points, presentations, and correspondence on behalf of CalOptima's leadership.
- Works with internal clients to provide counsel and document review to ensure accuracy, consistent messages, and appropriate writing style.
- Provides communications support for Board of Directors, executive and staff initiatives and activities.
- Assist in the development of marketing and advertising materials for CalOptima's lines of business.
- Collaborates with Communications department colleagues to develop and implement marketing and communication plans.
- Supports media relations efforts including but not limited to research, data collection and subject matter expert engagement.
- Contributes content or ideas as appropriate to support CalOptima's social media efforts.
- Provides excellent customer service.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Possesses the Ability to:
- Communicate clearly and concisely with diverse audiences, including all levels of staff, health care leaders, community organizations, the public, and media.
- Write on diverse topics under tight deadlines.
- Edit consistently and accurately, using Associated Press style.
- Proactively obtain information with minimal supervision.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Use a computer and appropriate software (e.g., Microsoft Office: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint) and job-specific applications/systems to produce material applicable to the position assignment.
Experience & Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Health Administration, or related field required.
- 5+ years of professional writing experience required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, English, Health Administration, or related field preferred.
- Professional experience in the health care or human services environment using effective verbal and written skills preferred.
- Proficient with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), web programs, and other relevant publishing software preferred.
Knowledge of:
- Strategies to communicate with members, providers, community-based organizations, and employees about CalOptima's operations and lines of business.
- Health care environment, including managed care and provider delivery systems.
- Tools for enhancing business relationships with employees, providers, and community partners.
- Techniques to create high-quality communication materials, with accurate content and attractive design.
- Media campaign development and outreach strategies for local, state and industry outlets.
- Social media strategies and techniques.
